Fresh off her September split from Penn Badgley after three years together, the actress. 24, has spent some quality time with Gosling, 34, on both the East and West coasts.

"There a definite attraction there," the source adds.

It's always good when your mom approves of your dating choices – even if it's just your onscreen mom.

With Ryan Gosling and Blake Lively apparently enjoying a special closeness, Kelly Rutherford – who plays Lively's mother on Gossip Girl – has given the pair the thumbs-up.

"It'd be great [if they were dating]. Blake's an amazing person," Rutherford said Friday at the opening of the new restaurant Beauty & Essex in New York. "She's so gorgeous. He's a lucky man if they are!"

Neither Gosling not Lively is admitting to anything serious between them. "She's an incredible actress; she's a good friend," Gosling told PEOPLE last week at a lunch for Blue Valentine in New York at the Kimberly Hotel.

Ryan Gosling’s new movie Blue Valentine almost got an NC-17 rating, but the actor kept the flirtation with Blake Lively noticeably G-rated at the film's premiere after-party.

Still, the pair were almost inseparable as they engaged in close conversation Thursday night while the event spun around them at The Top of the Standard at the Standard Hotel in New York. At one point, Gosling started to leave Lively’s side and the actress yanked him back to continue chatting, according to an observer.

As the party wound down, they headed downstairs to the hotel’s Standard Grill to dine with two other companions.

Lively, 23, and Gosling, 30, were first spotted together in October at Disneyland where they took in the sights and some ice cream at the park, an appropriate setting since Gosling once was a Mouseketeer.

Neither of the actors is admitting to anything serious. "She's an incredible actress; she's a good friend," Gosling told PEOPLE at a lunch Thursday for Blue Valentine in New York at the Kimberly Hotel.

When asked generally about romances between actors and actresses, Gosling says, "You're not allowed to have friends in this business."

This bi-coastal beauty aspires for the classic look, and tries to avoid the latest craze. “I like pieces that I can wear no matter when,” she says. “If I’m going to spend my money on something, I want it to last for awhile. I’m not much of a trend-savvy person. I like what I feel most confident in. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in style.”

But she won’t bash those some consider fashion disasters.

“I don’t really have a pet peeve with fashion, because I feel like if the person wants to wear that, then they should be entitled to wear it,” she says. “I think what you wear is a reflection of who you are as a person, so I don’t think anybody should hold that against you.”

Lauren Conrad Says Ryan Gosling Hit On Her

Lauren Conrad and boyfriend Kyle Howard were whipping themselves into a frenzy Thursday night at Deluxe, where we just happened to be an earwitness.

Lauren claims that Ryan Gosling tried to hit on her and she told Kyle, "Who does he think he is? I'm with you. I would never..." At that point we couldn't stop listening and Kyle said: "I know baby, if I was there I would have set him straight."

But sadly, that wasn't the end of it. Kyle then started chatting with a friend and suddenly there was testosterone in the air, and a lot of it. "Let's go find Ryan Gosling. Let's beat him up," one of them said. And yes, it was funny that they kept calling him "Ryan Gosling" instead of just Ryan.

Of course we have no idea if Ryan Gosling did hit on Lauren, we only know what we heard. And there are many who would say if he did hit on her she should be flattered!
